OKLAHOMA CITY – As summer kicks off, Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC) is thrilled to announce the continuing partnership with Riversport Adventures Park for the upcoming three-day TURTLE (Teaching Urbans Roads To Lifestyle and Exercise) Camp. This exciting collaboration aims to empower children in underserved communities by promoting exercise, nutrition and reducing the risks of diabetes. TURTLE Camp will take place from June 27 – 29, 2023.
TURTLE Camp offers an action-packed day of adventure, allowing kids to immerse themselves in activities, like kayaking, white water rafting, surfing, dragon boating, and more. Alongside their adventures, youth will learn about nutrition, Native culture and the importance of mental health. OKCIC’s highly trained staff is committed to fostering the development of healthy American Indians of all ages through fitness training and health education programs like TURTLE Camp.
Recent studies from the American Diabetes Association estimate about 283,000 individuals under the age of 20 have been diagnosed with diabetes. Furthermore, the World Health Organization reports that a staggering 41 million children struggle with being overweight and obese annually.
“Children deserve a chance at a healthy, happy life,” OKCIC’s Pediatric Dietitian Michaela Parrott said. “It’s heartbreaking to know how many children in the U.S. suffer from diabetes and the effects of an unhealthy diet. That’s why I love TURTLE Camp and its design. It was created with the idea in mind that everyone deserves a chance at a future, no matter their background or ethnicity.”
Oklahoma City Indian Clinic, a 501 (c(3)(c)(3) nonprofit clinic committed to providing health and wellness services to American Indians in central Oklahoma, is steadfast in its dedication to combat these statistics and improve the health of Native youth.
