OKLAHOMA CITY- Since the pandemic, violence against women has increased significantly in the United States. Recent studies from the United Nations Women show that 45% of women reported noticing an increase in gender-based violence within the past couple of years. Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC) acknowledges the concerns accompanied by these statistics and is committed to empowering women with the knowledge and skills to stay safe.
- Always be aware of your surroundings and the people in them
Being alert to one’s surroundings and the individuals in them is an essential tip for ensuring personal safety. It’s important to take note of any potential risks and unusual behavior. By staying alert a person can better anticipate any potential threats.
- Trust your instincts
Instincts are a powerful ally in responding to potentially dangerous situations. If something feels off or unsettling, trusting your gut to lead can be the difference between life and death. Our subconscious mind picks up on the red flags our conscious mind may not catch. It’s important to acknowledge and respond to our feelings based on our body’s feelings.
- Help is always available
It’s important to remember that help is always available even in uncomfortable situations. If there’s a moment when personal safety is of concern, it is recommended that you call the local authorities.
To further support the community, OKCIC is offering free self-defense classes for women every Wednesday in April to both patients and non-patients. These classes are designed to equip participants with practical techniques to ensure self-protection. Interested parties are encouraged to call OKCIC at (405) 948- 4900 ext. 519 for more information.
