The rise in opioid overdoses has become a concerning issue for health officials in the United States. 75% of the almost 92,000 drug overdose deaths in 2020 were linked to opioids. Among those troubling statistics, the rate of drug overdose deaths among American Indians stand above the national average.
Opioid misuse remains a significant risk factor contributing to opioid-related incidents, often resulting from the combination of an opioid with other drugs or alcohol. Individuals with a history of substance abuse face an elevated risk of overdosing, emphasizing the urgent need to raise awareness about the dangers of taking opioids that are not prescribed to an individual or take more than prescribed.
In an effort to address this risk, Oklahoma City Indian Clinic’s Pharmacy offers Naloxone, a drug that treats narcotic overdoses in emergency situations, to patients with an active chart.
