Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC) is dedicated to bringing awareness to the mental health challenges affecting the 2SLGBTQ+ community and offering compassionate support to help individuals feel seen, valued, and included. Many 2SLGBTQ+ people face unique and significant mental health challenges, with bisexual and transgender individuals among those most affected.
Studies reveal that 2SLGBTQ+ youth, in particular, are vulnerable to severe mental health struggles. A majority have endured threats, harassment, or even violence related to their sexual orientation or gender identity, creating added barriers to their sense of well-being. Even more troubling, many transgender individuals avoid seeking essential medical care out of fear of discrimination.
OKCIC is Committed to Inclusive Health Care
OKCIC understands that these experiences can profoundly impact one’s mental health and is committed to ensuring that every 2SLGBTQ+ patient feels embraced and supported. To foster an environment of genuine inclusivity, OKCIC incorporates preferred pronouns in patient health charts and displays welcoming signs at all entrances. The clinic also provides specialized support groups to meet the needs of 2SLGBTQ+ patients, creating safe spaces that nurture a sense of belonging and acceptance.
Creating a Safe Space and Community for 2SLGBTQ+
The Two-Spirited 2SLGBTQ+ adult support group, for example, offers a compassionate environment for encouragement, support, and advocacy, helping to foster health and connection in the community. For younger people, the Empower Hour teen support group offers 2SLGBTQ+ youth, aged 13-18, a welcoming space where they can freely express themselves, find encouragement, and build resilience alongside supportive peers and staff.
OKCIC invites members of the Native community who are interested in learning more about these support groups or becoming a patient to reach out by calling (405) 948-4900. Through these resources and ongoing support, OKCIC remains committed to honoring each individual’s journey, ensuring every patient feels valued, supported, and genuinely welcomed.
