Oklahoma City Indian Clinic promotes flu vaccinations
OKLAHOMA CITY- Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit clinic providing health and wellness services to American Indians in central Oklahoma, is a supporter of vaccines to fight seasonal flu.
The influenza virus, also known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory virus. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, every year, millions of people get the flu but the seasonal flu vaccine can lower the risk of getting the flu by about half.
Getting the yearly flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself from the flu.
“Our patients need to be familiar with the benefits of getting the flu vaccine,” Stephanie Harris said, Director of Public Health at OKCIC. “Having the vaccine benefits your health and the health of those around you.”
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the flu vaccine has many benefits. This includes reducing the risk of flu-associated hospitalization for children, working age adults, and older adults; and can protect those who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness, like babies and young children, older people, and people with certain chronic health conditions.
Flu vaccines may be available at private doctor’s offices, public or community health clinics, or pharmacies. Check with your health care provider or pharmacist to receive the vaccine. OKCIC patients can get a flu shot by appointment or on a walk-in basis in Medical, Public Health or the Pharmacy.
