Bringing the Community Together for Health & Fun
Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC) welcomed nearly 300 participants to Route 66 Park at Lake Overholser for its annual Walk for Wellness and 5K Fun Run. The family-friendly event was open to the public and blended physical activity, cultural connection, and community resources into one vibrant morning.
A Day for Everyone
Attendees enjoyed a variety of health-focused activities, from OKCIC’s Mobile Health Clinic to engaging with numerous community and tribal health partners. The health fair also featured raffle prizes, arts and crafts, and traditional dance performances. Participants celebrated their achievement with themed T-shirts, post-race snacks, and medals to mark their 5K finish.
Encouraging a Healthy Lifestyle
OKCIC created the Walk for Wellness in 1997 to encourage healthy habits and raise awareness about the unique health challenges faced by American Indians. According to the Indian Health Service, American Indians face higher rates of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and chronic liver disease compared to other populations. Events like this aim to inspire lifestyle changes while strengthening connections between tribal and local communities.
Walking for a Purpose
This event isn’t just about exercise. It’s about coming together, supporting each other, and taking the first steps toward healthier lives. Every step taken here has the potential to improve the health of our community for generations to come.
Plans are already underway for next year’s Walk for Wellness in May 2026, promising another day of health, culture, and community spirit.
