Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC) is dedicated to supporting Native youth by addressing the increasing need for mental health education and resources, especially in light of the troubling rise in suicide rates among young Native people.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services:
Suicide is the second leading cause of death for American Indian and Alaska Native individuals aged 10 to 34.
These statistics reveal a significant mental health crisis within Indigenous communities, one that disproportionately affects Native youth.
In response, OKCIC has ramped up efforts to provide essential mental health resources tailored to young people. The clinic has partnered with organizations like Rainbow Youth Project USA to create a more supportive and understanding environment for those facing mental health challenges. Mental health has historically been a difficult topic to discuss within Native communities, but more young people are now recognizing its importance and seeking the help they deserve.
Commitment to Change
OKCIC is committed to breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and ensuring Native youth have access to the care and support they need. From counseling services to support groups, the clinic is working hard to close the gaps in mental health care and foster a sense of well-being among Native youth.
