Thrush
Candida is a fungus that causes several different infections. When a child is infected with this fungus and it affects the mouth, it is called thrush. It often occurs in infants and children.
Symptoms:
- White or yellow thick patches or plaques to tongue, lips, gums, roof of mouth, inner cheeks
- Can be painful
- Can cause pain when swallowing if throat is involved
Treatment:
- Nystatin in mouth 4x a day for 10-15 days
- Gentian violet in mouth once; repeat in 1 week if thrush has not resolved
- Soak all bottles/nipples/rings/teethers/pacifiers in ½ white vinegar and ½ warm water x1 hour or overnight then wash with hot/soapy water; this needs to be done everyday until thrush has resolved
- If patient is breastfed, mom will also need topical treatment for her nipples
