Quit Week provides an opportunity to give up smoking

Oklahoma City Indian Clinic provides tips for tobacco cessation during Quit Week.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit clinic providing health and wellness services to American Indians in central Oklahoma, wants to encourage people to give up smoking during Quit Week.

In 2022, quitting tobacco will be a New Year’s resolution for many people. Quit Week will be observed January 19-26th to help encourage those who are ready to quit.

“Smoking harms nearly every organ in your body and puts you at risk for several diseases, including cancer, emphysema, diabetes and others,” said Janice Hixson, OKCIC’s Chief Medical Officer. “Secondhand smoke also increases the risk of heart and lung disease, especially among children and pregnant women.”

Even though smoking presents health risks, the health benefits from quitting are almost instant. Within 24 hours, your heart rate, blood pressure and carbon monoxide in the bloodstream will enter normal levels. Within months, your circulation and lung function will improve, and your heart attack risk will begin to drop. You will also cough less and breathe easier.

Many people want to quit, but find the process intimidating. Planning ahead can help you get through challenges. Start by setting a quit date within the next week or two so you have time to prepare. Tell the people in your life you plan on quitting so they know how to support you during this time. Next, think about your reasons for quitting. Write these down and put them where you can see them every day. Think about your triggers, including social triggers and times that you typically smoke during the day. Knowing your triggers will help you anticipate cravings. Next, come up with strategies to deal with cravings. This could include chewing gum or calling a friend who supports you.

“Medications and Nicotine Replacement Therapy are also methods for quitting smoking,” Hixson said. “These methods, especially used alongside counseling, have been effective. Talk to your provider to see if these options are right for you.”

OKCIC has tobacco cessation resources available for patients. Call (405) 948-4900 ext. 294 or 384 for more information.

Quitting smoking can be intimidating, but there are many different methods to help you through the process. Join thousands of Americans and give up smoking during Quit Week.
