OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit clinic providing health and wellness services to American Indians in central Oklahoma, is raising awareness about prostate cancer and is encouraging American Indian men to prioritize regular screening for early detection. Recent studies show that prostate cancer affects a significant number of men, with American Indians facing additional challenges due to disparities in health care access.
Prostate cancer poses a significant health risk. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that out of every 100 American men, about 13 will be diagnosed with the disease during their lifetime. Even more alarming data shows that two or three of those men are expected to die of this cancer. These numbers further emphasize the importance for American Indians to get tested, as they face limited access to care.
“It is crucial for American Indian men to prioritize regular prostate cancer screenings, as early detection plays a vital role in combating this disease,” said Janice Hixson, OKCIC’s Chief Medical Officer. “By taking proactive steps and advocating for their own health, Native people can greatly reduce the impact of prostate cancer within their communities.”
OKCIC is committed to supporting American Indian men in their fight against prostate cancer. By providing educational opportunities, awareness campaigns and access to the best doctors in the metro, OKCIC aims to address existing disparities and improve access to screenings and treatments.
