Dilation allows the doctor to see more of your retina and detect problems that can lead to blindness or systemic disease like diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Dilation lasts from 4-6 hours and causes blurred near vision and sensitivity to light. Patients may want a driver, but distance vision is typically not affected.
Yearly dilated eye exams are recommended for all people.
Retinal imaging takes approximately 10 minutes. Retinal imaging does not require dilation.
Diabetic patients should have imaging performed at least annually for earlier detection of diabetic eye disease.
