OKCIC’s newest service will combat food insecurity among American Indians in Oklahoma.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit clinic providing health and wellness services to American Indians in central Oklahoma, held a grand opening for the Oklahoma City Indian Clinic Bank of America Native Resource and Nutrition Center Friday, April 28, 2023.
OKCIC received a $150,000 grant from Bank of America in November 2022 to create the resource and nutrition center, and the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma provides food boxes for patients.
“We are thankful to Bank of America and to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma for partnering with us to combat the important issue of food insecurity among American Indians,” said Robyn Sunday-Allen, OKCIC’s Chief Executive Officer. “This service allows us to connect patients with the resources they need.”
Services provided to patients include free food, clothing, shoes and blankets. Patients and Native community members are welcome to walk in and speak to our social services specialists to find information about community resources in the area, including Native American Veterans Homeless Programs, transportation and more. OKCIC is working to expand services to include an in-house dietitian and community partners to help patients sign up for various benefits, including SNAP, employment assistance and childcare.
“Food assistance is one of our most requested resources,” said Jennifer Williams, OKCIC’s Public Health Coordinator. “We are excited to meet patients’ needs in a stigma-free environment.”
