Oklahoma City Indian Clinic’s Diabetes Programs and Prevention are comprehensive initiatives dedicated to enhancing the well-being of the Native community affected by diabetes and pre-diabetes, recognizing the higher prevalence of diabetes among Native Americans compared to other racial/ethnic groups. These programs are meticulously designed to provide extensive support in diabetes education, treatment, and prevention, embodying OKCIC’s commitment to addressing the unique health care needs of our community.

Patients are encouraged to participate in Get SET, an eight week, self paced wellness program that promotes healthy lifestyle habits to help prevent and manage diabetes. Open to OKCIC patients ages 12 and older with an active chart, the program combines exercise and nutrition through fitness and cooking classes while supporting participants in reaching their individual health goals.
Patients diagnosed with diabetes are referred to the BRAID Diabetes Education program. BRAID is a nationally recognized Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support program that focuses on building essential self-care behaviors. The program uses a culturally responsive curriculum called Beginning Steps Toward Diabetes Self-Care, which covers the following key areas: healthy eating, being active, monitoring, taking medication, problem solving, reducing risks, and healthy coping.
Patients with prediabetes can reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes through STAR (Steps to Achieve Results), a year long lifestyle program focused on building healthy, lasting habits through education, physical activity, and personalized support. Participants attend classes and receive guidance from a certified lifestyle coach and registered dietitian. STAR follows a nationally recognized, evidence based curriculum through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program (DPRP). Many participants who complete the program lower their A1c and move out of the prediabetes range, demonstrating its effectiveness in supporting long term diabetes prevention.
Patients with type 2 diabetes at OKCIC are eligible for the SHINE program, a 12-week program with weekly one-hour classes designed to support diabetes management and healthy lifestyle changes. The program assists patients in building the lifestyle needed to control blood sugar and prevent complications. Participants learn to identify beneficial and harmful blood sugar trends, make healthy food choices, and physical activity. A team of registered dietitians and certified trainers provides personalized support. A link is available below for patients to inquire about all OKCIC diabetes classes.
OKCIC Cooking presents a fresh array of recipes in each scheduled class, meticulously crafted to cater to the unique dietary requirements of a typical STAR patient. These engaging classes introduce new and nutritious recipes and provide valuable insights into healthy cooking techniques, which empowers STAR patients to make informed and delicious choices contributing to their overall well-being.
The HPDP team actively collaborates with diabetes programs to enhance the well-being of the Native community. This team promotes health and strength through engaging fitness training and educational health programs, fostering a positive and enriching experience for participants.
