Inspiring Fun, Creativity & Independence
By: Aisa Trice, RD/LD
Oklahoma City Indian Clinic summer Kids in the Kitchen program is a fun and engaging way to get children involved in cooking while trying new foods in a safe, supportive environment. The goal is to help kids build confidence and independence with essential kitchen skills, whether it’s washing dishes, chopping vegetables, measuring ingredients, or following a recipe from start to finish. Every task is an opportunity for them to grow more capable and comfortable in the kitchen.
Where Food, Fun & Friendship Come Together
In addition to learning practical skills, participants also work together to prepare meals, developing teamwork and cooperation along the way.
This summer’s themes included Gardening, All Around the World, Fiesta, Outer Space, Under the Sea, and Toy Story. Each year, OKCIC selects themes designed to capture a wide range of interests, encouraging creativity while introducing children to new flavors and food traditions. These imaginative themes not only make cooking more exciting, but they also open the door to conversations about culture, ingredients, and healthy eating habits.
Confidence Through Cooking
Above all, we want kids to walk away knowing that food can be fun, exciting, and something to feel proud of—whether they’re cooking for themselves, their families, or their community.
