OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit clinic providing health and wellness services to American Indians in central Oklahoma, recently received a $100,000 grant from the Cigna Foundation through its World of Difference grant program to support OKCIC’s maternal and child health care program.
“We are grateful to the Cigna Foundation for their support,” said Dr. Janice Hixson, Chief Medical Officer at OKCIC. “This funding allows us to hire a community health worker to assist our prenatal nurse navigator in providing education, screening, outreach, and public health interventions to American Indian communities.”
OKCIC’s maternal and child health care program provides American Indian and Alaska Native women opportunities for culturally appropriate specialized care services. These include, but are not limited to, increasing knowledge of prenatal, postpartum, early childhood care and safety; and increasing breastfeeding rates through culturally-tailored supportive initiatives.
“We are proud to assist OKCIC’s work supporting the American Indian community in central Oklahoma,” said Susan Stith, executive director of the Cigna Foundation. “Moms-to-be and their babies should have access to the health care they need, and we are pleased that this grant will help OKCIC expand the critical services they provide to their community.”
“The program is to build relationships with patients and provide support for American Indian women and their families,” Dr. Hixson said.
