An Event for Everyone
The STAR (Steps to Achieve Results) Diabetes Prevention Program hosted its first-ever community chair volleyball tournament in March 2025, at Central Baptist Church. The STAR program is a year-long, CDC-recognized lifestyle modification initiative for patients with pre-diabetes, offering personalized coaching, nutrition support, and wellness activities to help prevent type 2 diabetes. The event was a resounding success, uniting participants of all ages and backgrounds in a fun-filled atmosphere of teamwork, laughter, and community spirit.
A New Inclusive Game
Chair volleyball has quickly become a popular activity among Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC) patients, offering a unique and inclusive way for people to engage in physical activity. The game levels the playing field since everyone participates while seated in a chair, making it accessible to people of all abilities and ages — from 12 years old through adulthood. The simplicity and adaptability of chair volleyball allow everyone to join in and have a great time.
A Friendly Competition, May the Best Team Win!
Teams of six players were formed with each team identified by a color. While chair volleyball follows the general structure of traditional volleyball, there are a few key differences: players are allowed as many hits as needed to get the ball over the net, spiking is not allowed, and participants must remain seated during play. These modifications ensure that the game remains inclusive and enjoyable for all skill levels. The tournament was played in a double-elimination format, adding to the excitement and friendly competition. Laughter and smiles filled the room as both staff and patients embraced the spirit of the game. Participants stayed through the entire two-hour event to cheer on the final matches and celebrate the top three teams.
Chair Volleyball is a Success
Snacks were provided throughout the event, and OKCIC staff were on hand to referee the games, provide medical support if needed, and recruit volunteers for future OKCIC events. Their presence helped ensure the event ran smoothly and safely.
Patients were enthusiastic about the experience, with many expressing how much they enjoyed the event. Several attendees described it as one of the most fun and well-run events they had ever attended. The success of this inaugural tournament highlights the power of community and the positive impact of engaging, accessible activities.
