Early Detection Can Save Your Life
Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC) has expanded its radiology services to include automated breast imaging, enhancing its commitment to providing comprehensive and culturally sensitive health care to the American Indian community in central Oklahoma. This addition underscores OKCIC’s dedication to early detection
and prevention of breast cancer among its patients.
Automated Breast Ultrasound System — What is ABUS?
ABUS is an advanced imaging technology designed to detect breast cancer in women with dense breast tissue, which may not show up clearly on traditional mammograms. The ABUS system uses high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to create detailed images of the breast tissue, providing a more thorough view and helping detect abnormalities that may otherwise go unnoticed.
ABUS Helps Find Cancers That Might Otherwise Go Unseen.
ABUS is especially beneficial because it automates the process of performing an ultrasound, making it more consistent and efficient. This technology is often used as a supplemental screening tool in conjunction with mammography to provide a clearer picture of breast health for women with dense breasts. It helps healthcare providers detect early-stage breast cancer, which can improve treatment outcomes.
ABUS advanced screening improves breast cancer detection by 35.7% when used with mammography.
Knowledge is Power
The American Cancer Society recommends that women receive yearly mammograms beginning at the age of 40. If they have been informed that they have dense breast tissue, they should talk to their doctor about their specific risk and consider additional screening tests that might be appropriate.
