Oklahoma City Indian Clinic’s Diabetes Programs and Prevention are comprehensive initiatives dedicated to enhancing the well-being of the Native community affected by diabetes and pre-diabetes, recognizing the higher prevalence of diabetes among Native Americans compared to other racial/ethnic groups. These programs are meticulously designed to provide extensive support in diabetes education, treatment, and prevention, embodying OKCIC’s commitment to addressing the unique health care needs of our community.
Patients are encouraged to participate in Get SET and Fight Diabetes. Get SET is a quarterly exercise and nutrition program open to all patients, promoting a healthy lifestyle that prevents and/or controls diabetes. Patients who complete the required fitness and diet education sessions within each session earn incentives.
Patients diagnosed with diabetes are immediately referred to the BRAID program for education. The BRAID program is a nationally recognized diabetes self management education and support program. It is designed to equip patients to control their diabetes successfully. This five-session program includes information on monitoring, nutrition, physical activity, mental/emotional health and medications. The BRAID program also provides follow-up support education, including a medical nutrition therapy class called BRAID Balance.
Patients diagnosed with pre-diabetes are referred to the STAR program. This year-long program is designed to help patients at-risk for developing type 2 diabetes. This intense lifestyle modification program is nationally certified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program. This program is a series of classes and activities designed to improve lifestyle choices that lead to overall wellness and ultimately the prevention of type 2 diabetes. Patients will have access to a personal lifestyle coach, a registered dietitian, OKCIC’s Wellness Center and STAR cooking classes.
Active type 2 diabetes patients at OKCIC are eligible for the SHINE program, a concise and impactful weekly one-hour class. Within this program, patients have access to certified personal trainers, registered dietitians, and certified diabetes care and education specialists. This ensures a comprehensive and personalized approach to every patients’ journey.
OKCIC Cooking presents a fresh array of recipes in each scheduled class, meticulously crafted to cater to the unique dietary requirements of a typical STAR patient. These engaging classes introduce new and nutritious recipes and provide valuable insights into healthy cooking techniques, which empowers STAR patients to make informed and delicious choices contributing to their overall well-being.
The HPDP team actively collaborates with diabetes programs to enhance the well-being of the Native community. This team promotes health and strength through engaging fitness training and educational health programs, fostering a positive and enriching experience for participants.
