Advancing Men’s Health Through Culture, Community & Wellness
In October, Shiloh Adventure Camp in Oklahoma City served as the setting for Man vs. Wild, a men’s health event focused on wellness, cultural engagement, and community connection. Hosted in partnership with the Oklahoma City Area Indian Health Service, IHS Health Education, and Oklahoma City Indian Clinic’s Health Promotion Disease Prevention, the event brought together 47 Native men ages 18 and older for a full day of health education, outdoor recreation, and fellowship.
Participants took part in a wide range of recreational activities designed to promote physical fitness and engagement, including fishing, archery, pickleball, basketball, horseshoes, and stickball. These activities encouraged movement while fostering camaraderie. Attendees also participated in hands-on workshops where they crafted their own stickballs and archery arrows. These sessions highlighted the integration of cultural practices with physical activity, emphasizing wellness as a balance of tradition, movement, and skill-building.
Interactive Education for Lifelong Wellness
The day also featured educational presentations centered on preventive care and healthy living. Native chef Jason Champagne led a healthy cooking demonstration, sharing practical strategies for preparing nutritious meals and encouraging participants to incorporate healthier food choices into their daily routines. The Wewoka Indian Health Service presented information on colorectal cancer awareness, including an interactive 20-foot inflatable colon exhibit that supported education through visual learning. A fitness presentation by a trainer from the Oklahoma City Thunder emphasized the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle and long-term physical health.
Building Health Through Connection
Beyond education and activity, Man vs. Wild emphasized the importance of community in men’s health. By providing a culturally grounded and supportive environment, the event promoted both physical and emotional well-being while strengthening connections among participants.
Community Thanks
Oklahoma City Indian Clinic extends its appreciation to the Oklahoma City Area Indian Health Service, Wewoka Indian Health Service, the Oklahoma City Thunder, and all community partners who contributed to the success of this event.
